The Clocks Have Fallen Back — What Shorter Days Mean for Your Roof Plans

When the clocks fall back, most of us notice the extra hour of sleep. Roofers notice something else: the sun is setting before 5 p.m., and the working day just got shorter. For South Jersey homeowners with a roof question still hanging over them, that small change has a bigger effect than it seems.
How much daylight is actually left
In early November, South Jersey gets roughly 10 hours of daylight. By the end of the month, that drops to under 10. A full residential roof replacement needs most of a working day: tear-off, deck inspection, underlayment, shingles, ridge cap, and cleanup. As the days shorten, there is simply less margin for anything unexpected, like a section of rotted decking or a delivery that runs late.
That doesn’t make November work impossible. It does mean jobs need more careful planning, and it’s a good reason not to leave a known problem for “later this winter.”
What to look at this week
-
Ceilings and attic: any new stain, or a damp smell in the attic, after the last few storms is worth a professional look before the first hard freeze. -
Lifted or missing shingles: low-angle light makes these easy to spot. Photograph anything you see. -
Flashing at chimneys, skylights, and vents: gaps or rust staining are common entry points for water. -
Gutters and downspouts: sagging sections or overflow marks on the siding mean water isn’t going where it should.
Repair now, or plan for spring?
Not every roof needs work before winter. A roof with years of life left and no known problems can usually wait for a planned project. But a roof with a known leak, damaged flashing, or storm damage shouldn’t be left to go through a winter of freezing and thawing. Water that gets in now can freeze, expand, and widen the opening, and the repair bill tends to grow along with it.
The simplest way to know which category you’re in is a professional inspection. It’s free with Diamond Roofing, it comes with a written summary, and there is no obligation to proceed.
