The Gutter Job Most South Jersey Homeowners Skip — Your Final November Cleaning

Plenty of homeowners clean their gutters in October and call it done. In South Jersey, that’s often a mistake. Oaks hold their leaves longer than most trees, and many yards get their heaviest drop in the first half of November. A gutter that was spotless on October 20th can be packed again by Thanksgiving.

That last cleaning matters more than the first, because whatever is in your gutters when the cold arrives is what sits there all winter.

Why November leaves are the problem

Wet leaves compact into a dense mat that blocks water far more effectively than dry ones. Once temperatures drop below freezing, that mat freezes solid. Meltwater from the roof then has nowhere to go, and it backs up under the first courses of shingles or spills over the edge and freezes into icicles. Both outcomes can damage the roof edge, the fascia, and the ceiling below.

Timing tip: wait until most of the leaves are down, then clean. If you have mature oaks, plan on checking again after the final drop rather than assuming one cleaning will cover the season.

A thorough November gutter check

  1. 1
Clear the channels. Remove leaves and debris from every section. Gutter scoops or gloved hands work well; work from a stable ladder with someone holding it.
  2. 2
Flush with a hose. Run water from the far end toward each downspout. Water that pools, drains slowly, or backs up points to a clog or a sag.
  3. 3
Check the downspouts. Make sure each one is clear and that its extension sends water several feet away from the foundation.
  4. 4
Look at the attachments. Gutters pulling away from the fascia, loose spikes, or gaps at seams should be fixed before ice adds weight.
  5. 5
Inspect the fascia and roof edge. Soft, stained, or peeling wood behind the gutter is a sign that water has been getting where it shouldn’t.

When to stop and call someone

Cleaning gutters from a ladder is a common cause of home injuries, and November adds wet leaves, slick rungs, and early darkness. If your gutters are high, your house has multiple stories, or you aren’t comfortable on a ladder, hire it out. And never climb onto the roof itself to reach a clog.

If your cleaning turns up sagging runs, seams that leak, or rotted fascia, that’s a repair or replacement conversation. Diamond Roofing installs seamless gutters and gutter guard systems throughout South Jersey, and our free inspection covers the whole drainage system, not only the shingles.

Seamless gutters

Custom-fit to your roofline, with no mid-run seams to leak or separate.

Gutter guards

Mesh systems that keep most leaves out, so you spend less time on a ladder each fall.

Ten minutes of attention now can keep a frozen gutter from turning into a roof-edge repair in February.
