Before You Leave for Vacation
June is vacation planning season in South Jersey — shore weeks, summer camps, family trips. Most homeowners do a reasonable job of prepping the house before they leave: holding the mail, setting the thermostat, asking a neighbor to water the plants. What almost nobody does is spend ten minutes thinking about the roof.
That’s understandable. The roof doesn’t need you to turn it off or water it. But it can develop a problem while you’re gone that turns a minor repair into a major one — and an empty house with an undetected leak is one of the worst scenarios in home ownership. Here’s a quick pre-vacation roof checklist that takes less time than packing.
Do a ground-level visual before you go
Walk the perimeter of your home and look up. You’re not doing a full inspection — you’re doing a quick scan for anything obviously wrong that you’d rather catch now than come home to. Missing or lifted shingles after a recent storm, debris sitting in a valley or against a pipe boot, gutters that have pulled away from the fascia — these are the things that turn into active leaks given a week of June thunderstorms and nobody home to catch them early.
If you spot something that concerns you, call Diamond Roofing before you leave. We return all calls within 24 hours and can often fit a pre-vacation inspection and minor repair into the schedule with short notice in early June, before the peak summer rush locks up our calendar.
Check your attic for any existing moisture signs
If you haven’t been in your attic recently, take a quick look before you go. You’re looking for any dark staining on rafters, any soft spots on the decking, or any daylight visible through the roof boards. Any of these signals an existing issue that will only worsen over a week of summer weather. An undetected attic leak that runs for seven days into insulation and framing is a significantly more expensive problem than the same leak caught the day it starts.
Make sure your gutters are clear
June brings some of the heaviest rainfall South Jersey sees all year, often in intense afternoon storms. A clogged gutter in June isn’t a fall-cleanup issue — it’s an active risk. When gutters back up during a heavy rain, water pools at the roof edge, backs up under shingles at the eaves, and can begin saturating the fascia and soffit in a single event. Five minutes with a hose confirming your gutters flow freely is worth doing before any extended absence.
Know where your shut-off is — just in case
This isn’t roof-specific, but it’s worth mentioning: if a serious roof leak develops while you’re away and someone is checking on the house, knowing where your main water shut-off is won’t help — but knowing your insurance company’s emergency contact number and having a trusted local contractor’s number accessible will. Save Diamond Roofing’s number before you go: (609) 268-9200. We’re available for emergency calls during summer storm season.
Consider a professional pre-season inspection
If your roof is more than 15 years old, or if you had any notable storms or ice events this past winter and spring, a professional inspection before vacation season is genuinely worthwhile. It takes about an hour, it’s free, and it either gives you confidence that everything is sound or identifies something that’s better fixed in June than discovered in August.

Walk the perimeter — quick ground-level scan for missing, lifted, or damaged shingles -
Check the attic — look for moisture staining, daylight through the deck, or soft spots -
Run a hose through gutters — confirm free flow to each downspout before any heavy rain week -

Book a professional inspection if your roof is 15+ years old or had storm events this past season
June is still the best booking window
One more thing worth knowing: if your roof inspection reveals that a replacement or significant repair is needed, June is the best time to get on a contractor’s schedule. July and August fill up fast as storm damage accumulates and homeowners who’ve been delaying start making calls. Booking in June means faster scheduling, better availability for your preferred timeline, and one less thing to manage when you get back.
